Corvidae Collective Gallery: What to expect as an artist and art collector
"I think that dark arts focus on feelings that are intrinsic to all human nature and in that way would naturally resonate, even more so in this society that seeks to repress anything straying from a set path." - Nikki Gray
Time and time again, Circus Living has featured artists whose works exhibit macabre or morbid characteristics but what about the art galleries who work hard to promote these artists? What about the gallery owners and representatives who place a lot of effort into planning exhibitions, staging these artists' artworks, and ensuring their works are seen by interested art collectors?
I thought it was about time the art galleries who promote the artists who fit this type of niche - macabre and morbid art - are also featured. For Circus Living's 4th art gallery feature, Nikki Gray of Corvidae Collective Gallery located in Nashville is featured.

Nikki Gray. I own the gallery, curate the shows, and manage the operations.
We have moved from our downtown location (culture shift in that location was incongruous with the gallery mission) and are currently representing artists online until we reopen a physical space next summer.
Corvidae is all about building a community of like-minded, intelligent people whose tastes vary from the mainstream art world. Nashville, for all its recent progress, had no other real venue for this type of art when I established the gallery. The community of artists that we have attracted somewhat symbolize the gallery's name — "corvidae" is the Latin term for a taxonomic family of birds that includes crows and ravens. Often considered the most intelligent of birds, the corvidae family is known for demonstrating self-awareness and cooperative behavior for the common good.
We feature a hybrid aesthetic with styles ranges from contemporary, pop surrealism, dark, to narrative arts in a variety of mediums. Often times with a literary bent.
I think that dark arts focus on feelings that are intrinsic to all human nature and in that way would naturally resonate, even more so in this society that seeks to repress anything straying from a set path. It is a way to reconnect and explore in a safer manner.
Artists can expect a welcoming home for their works in an environment that showcases their abilities to the fullest. Our collectors are well in tune with our aesthetic and are receptive to all the artists that we have shown and we actively nourish those relationships.
Mt. Olivet Cemetery features some of the oldest and most elaborate monuments in the area. Cheekwood has a wondrous sculpture trail that shouldn’t be missed featuring “Crawling Lady Hare” by Sophie Ryder is one of my favorites. The Frist Center downtown always has great exhibits and the art deco building is a must see on its own.
We do. We very much value exhibitions that pair established artists alongside emerging artists. We have calls for entries and all submission requirements listed on our website and definitely sign up for our newsletter (on the main page of the website) to get all the latest news.
Take your time when submitting your work. Choose the best pieces and send them in the appropriate format. A well written statement is helpful for us to see where your motivations lie, don't be afraid to put some humor in them if that is your voice.
