This isn’t the first time Kiarra and her gang have tasted protein bars made out of cricket flour. Since we’ve offered our reviews on other bars before, I am not going to bother going through the process of easing newcomers into eating bugs.
If you are hesitant but curious about eating culinary insects, check out our review of Exo vs. Lithic Nutrition for a brief run down on how cricket flour is a ‘safe’ transition to entomophagy.
If you are already an entomophagy-enthusiast who no longer needs to be convinced how eating insects is environmentally-friendly, sustainable, and downright nutritious, and you just want the lowdown on Live Longer’s and Avail’s bars, welcome fellow bug-eater and by all means, do keep on reading.
Stay updated on future entomophagy posts
For those who want to take it one step further or for those who are already bug eating connoisseurs, we are working on an entomophagy post that extends past cricket bars. Ready to take the next step or to find out more? Join our Circus and we’ll keep you updated on current and upcoming bug delicacies.

Review:
Live Longer currently only offers one flavour so I was a bit nervous giving the kids the bars to taste. It was a win or fail option - no second chances here. It turned out to be a win. I have mentioned before how cricket bar brands offer bars which differ vastly in flavour, taste, and texture. Live Longer, in comparison to Exo and Lithic Nutrition, offers a lighter, almost more refreshing, tasting bar. When I say lighter, I mean less dense-tasting and less sweeter. Though it contains more sugar content than Exo’s and Lithic Nutrition’s bars, Live Longer bar’s sugar content is all derived from the figs and raisins. There is no addition of honey, chocolate chips, or sugar in these bars. It was a welcome difference. When you ate one, you did not feel stuffed - just satisfied enough. The kids used the bars as fuel for during and after trips to the park. No sugar cravings afterwards either.
Avail
Avail was founded in February 2016 by Los Angeles native Scott Taylor. After his mom was suddenly diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer and passed away in 2014, Scott embarked on a personal mission to recharge and find himself. He quit his career in finance, moved to Latin America, took nutrition classes, explored, searched, and learned about diet and health. Shortly thereafter, he came up with the idea that lead to the birth of Avail bars.

Review:
Banana Ginger was an absolute hit with the kids, and me included. I was frankly surprised since the kids normally aren’t fans of bananas. I attribute their lack of enthusiasm for bananas resulting from the fact that most of the desserts I used to bake post-paleo were banana-based. I thought for certain they were over bananas. Paired with ginger, however, and they were sold. There’s just something about ginger that tickles the palate. The bar awakened my passion for ginger and I can honestly say I and the kids wouldn’t mind eating these again.

Review:
The kids and I liked this flavour as well. They prefered the Ginger Banana flavour but willingly ate all of this bar. We did notice a prominent almond butter taste. Banana Ginger goes down easier and only because the almond butter taste in the Brownie Chocolate Chip makes one feel parched after only a few bites.
Our final thoughts? As I have mentioned before, just because you’ve had one cricket bar doesn’t mean you have tasted them all. Do not rule out the idea of eating cricket bars based on one tasting alone. Try different flavours and different brands. We have compiled an ongoing list all of the cricket bars available out there to make your search easier. Be sure to join our Circus (aka mailing list for those of you new to our blog and unfamiliar with our catch phrases) by completing the form below to stay updated on our ongoing ‘for current and aspiring bug eaters’ list and upcoming features.
If you end up trying Live Longer or Avail, be sure to share your thoughts on Kiarra’s page on Facebook. She’d love to hear from you. This 6 year old loves getting attention...and of course, feedback...from her readers.
